Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving

Overview:

The Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing solicitation programs to increase annual operating support for the University received via the Annual Fund.  The senior associate director is also charged with increasing the number of donors providing annual gifts to the University, including alumni, young alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and other friends of the University, and ensuring that the University follows best industry practices in annual giving to yield the greatest results.  The Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving supervises one Associate Director and an Assistant Director who oversees the Phonathon Program with approximately 30 paid student callers.  The Senior Associate Director also supervises a part-time Development Associate and the work of student workers. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Annual and Parent Giving.                         

Responsibilities:

  • Develop annual plans for increasing annual giving to the University, including both establishing and achieving dollar-based fundraising expectations for overall annual giving, as well as unrestricted, college-based, and affinity annual giving.  Build strategic and tactical plans for achieving those goals.
  • Oversee and coordinate all programs in support of annual giving to the University of Rhode Island including: direct mail, phonathon, electronic appeals, and personal solicitation for annual gifts.  Focus on segments identified as having potential for the greatest growth.
  • Produce and interpret regular comparative annual giving status reports to monitor annual giving progress toward goals, as well as to ensure that the University is a leader among peers as measured externally in terms of total dollars, percentage participation, consistency of giving, and average gift size.
  • Develop effective working relationships with the URIF staff, the University community, students, and alumni reunion and affinity groups to cultivate an understanding of the needs of annual giving.
  • Coordinate annual giving fundraising initiatives with segments showing annual giving potential.
  • Work with the URIF Communications team to create and publicize the annual giving program including development of themes, brochures, promotional materials and other related print and electronic materials.
  • Work with the Donor Relations & Stewardship office to ensure that gifts and pledges are acknowledged appropriately, timely, and accurately.
  • Work with Advancement Services to oversee segmentation and list generation required for phonathon and printed appeals.
  • Maintain a portfolio of approximately 25 “top annual giving prospects” to personally cultivate, solicit, and steward for ongoing annual support to the University. 
  • Oversee and work with URIF Communications to execute special fundraising initiatives (i.e. Day of Giving) at the direction of the URIF President.
  • Understand program costs, and manage a budget for program expenses, ensuring that program expenses are appropriate for income generated.

Qualifications:

Excellent communication skills: the ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing especially for development and/or promotional activities.  Experience with programs such as reunion giving, senior class gift programs, giving societies, and other related annual giving programs. The ability to demonstrate leadership and supervise professional and support staff, take initiative, problem-solve, act independently and as a member of a team, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize. Good judgment, maturity including interpreting institutional policies, plans and objectives and to communicate the interpretation to subordinates and others.  Personal integrity, strong interpersonal skills and competence in preparing and presenting detailed studies and reports, including recommendations concerning the substance of the studies and reports; ability to prepare and deliver verbal presentations before diverse groups of people, accuracy and attention to detail is required. Some travel, as well as evening/weekend work is required. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Smart Call and Web browsers required.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of four years of experience in educational or non-profit fundraising; familiarity with data segmentation, direct mail, and a phonathon program. Proven experience in developing and implementing complex fundraising and marketing plans. The highest degree of professionalism and discretion in dealing with donors and potentially sensitive matters of donor confidentiality is required.
